Iconic rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar returned to Stoke's Regent Theatre last night to deliver a phenomenal performance. 

The work of writing duo of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the musical has stood the test of time with its biblical story, exquisite score and exceptional lyrics.  Memorable numbers I Don’t Know How To Love Him, Superstar and Gethsemane help provide an experience that is quite frankly unforgettable.

The current production on tour is directed by Timothy Sheader and is both mesmerising and moving while, set against the backdrop of a rock concert, tells a story of love, hardship, death and resurrection.

Playing Jesus is no small undertaking for any actor but Ian McIntosh is simply outstanding in the lead role - his presence on stage electrifying.  The raw emotion he conveys is breathtaking.  Luke Street as Judas is equally engaging, giving an extremely powerful performance that encompasses both anger and compassion. 

Hannah Richardson as the caring and loyal Mary Magdalene is simply stunning, her singing bringing a tear to the eye. Soul singers Louise Francis, Myla Carmen and Mia Musakambeva really get the audience moving too, as does Timo Tatzber as Herod. Ryan O’Donnell is also impressive as Pilate - a character both complex and cruel.  Jad Habchi as Ciaiaphas and Matt Bateman as Annas are also deserving of a mention. There are so many great performances in this production which, combined with exciting choreography and energising music, make it a pure joy to watch from start to finish

Jesus Christ Superstar also showcases fantastic visual creativity with the clever use of searchlights and glitter - both of which need to be seen to be fully appreciated. The set and props are very creative and the crucifixion scene is just phenomenal.

One of the most powerful musicals to ever hit the stage, Jesus Christ Superstar promises an experience not to be missed.
