It simply wouldn't be Christmas without a visit to The Regent Theatre to enjoy the glitz and glamour on offer at the venue's spectacular annual panto.

This year is no exception, with legendary local lad Jonathan Wilkes playing the central role of Jack Trot. Wilkes always makes the panto his own by integrating familiar references to his beloved home town and by creating a lovable, likeable, funny and cheeky main character.

Jack and the Beanstalk The Giant Pantomime Spectacular tells the story of a country boy living with his dad Farmer Trot, played by the very engaging Kai Owen. Jack's girlfriend Princess Jill is sweetly depicted by Michelle Andrews and there's also an array of cute animals - including the family's beloved cow Daisy. The plot centres around Daisy needing to be rescued after Jack unknowingly sells her to the show's baddie, Fleshcreep - played menacingly by Noel Sullivan, who intends to make her into steaks for his master the Giant who lives high up in the sky. This is where the Beanstalk comes into play as it is the advanced mode of access to beloved Daisy! The plot is fantastical and comical with some technological twists and turns that makes for sheer fun and engaging entertainment. Of course, it wouldn't be panto without a bit of beautiful fairy sparkle too and the lovely Spirit of the Beans is played by the talented Rio Maya who sprinkles magic wherever she goes.  

The Regent Theatre never disappoints with its Christmas production which is always a visual spectacle and is undoubtedly the highlight of the theatre year for community engagement and audience appreciation.

Credit must go to the show's writer Alan McHugh and the production team at Crossroads Pantomimes for creating a truly local offering. Musical Director Aaron Nice is also deserving of a shout out for creating a memorable score with familiar tracks. Choreographer James Bennett has also produced a stunning display and the costumes are always beautiful. The whole cast is superb, including the talented dancers in the ensemble, many of whom stem from the Wilkes Academy.

A real highlight of the show is the use of 3D visuals which are outstanding and add a real extra thrill to an evening of seasonal entertainment. This is one festive offering not to be missed!
