An exhibition of colourful photographic postcards will take a nostalgic look back at British seaside resorts, holiday parks and tourist attractions from the 1960s onwards.
Titled Wish You Were Here, the exhibition will take place in the Gallery Garden, Walsall Arboretum and will feature enlargements of original John Hinde postcards, one of the world’s leading producers of postwar photographic postcards.
Over 60 postcards of popular British holiday destinations from the 1960s and 1970s are featured in the exhibition, which is open every day from Friday 21 July - Monday 4 September and is free of charge.
Most of the destinations featured will be familiar to people from Birmingham and the Black Country and include Blackpool, Weymouth, Weston-super-Mare, Llandudno, Torquay and St Ives. Other cards show scenes of London, Longleat, Stratford-upon Avon and Butlins holiday camps in Skegness, Filey, Ayr and Bognor Regis.
John Hinde postcards were shot on Ektachrome film and are renowned for their distinctive style and bright hyper-vivid colours, with a trademark yellow and red added to numerous cars, clothes, deck chairs and boats to make the postcards stand out in souvenir stalls.
