The Royal Shakespeare Company will mark the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort with a series of activities over the weekend and throughout the month of May.
The RSC is collaborating with the four other royal charterships (Royal Opera House, Royal Ballet, Royal College of Music and Royal College of Art) to create a spectacular one-off performance of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet for the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle.
It will take place in the grounds of Windsor Castle on Sunday 7 May, beginning at 8pm, in front of 20,000 members of the public and invited guests and will be broadcast on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.
RSC incoming Co-Artistic Directors, Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey, will direct Ncuti Gatwa and Mei Mac as Romeo and Juliet. Ncuti Gatwa received an Ian Charleson commendation for his role of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet at Home Theatre Manchester, and has also been cast as the 15th Doctor Who. Mei Mac played Mei in the RSC’s Olivier multi award-winning stage adaptation of My Neighbour Totoro, for which she was nominated for an Olivier award for Best Actress.
The RSC will be streaming the Coronation coverage from 10am on Saturday 6 May in The Other Place, Stratford-upon-Avon which will be acting as a warm hub, free refreshments will be provided. Visitors can also take part in a range of free family friendly activities inspired by the Coronation including the chance to be ‘King for the day’ with their own throne selfie, and costumes on display inspired by the richness of the communities of the UK, alongside wild crown and communal crafts. Entry to The Other Place will be free with no booking required.
Additionally, on Sundays throughout the month of May, the RSC’s Rooftop Restaurant will offer a special Coronation Afternoon Tea, using ingredients from around the British Isles. The Menu can be found here and information on how to book a table at the Rooftop Restaurant can be found here.
The RSC will also host a Community Big Lunch on Saturday 6 May to say thank you and to celebrate its local partners and collaborators, including Welcome Here, Warwickshire Young Carers, and members of the Julius Caesar Community chorus of local leaders and champions. This event is by invitation only.
