Tons of sparkle and sequins, stunning choreography, and 35 hit songs belted out by three powerhouse vocalists in a night of sheer unadulterated joy. Birmingham Hippdrome is inviting you to 'turn back time’ this week.
And do ‘believe’ that The Cher Show, a juke-box musical telling the fascinating story of one of music’s most iconic leading ladies, is a fantastic trip down memory lane telling the diva’s rags to riches rise to fame with trials and tribulations along the way.
The show itself is based on a book by Rick Elice. The part of Cher is played by three actresses: one portraying her in the 1950s and 60s (Babe), one for the 1970s (Lady), and one for the 1980s and 90s (Star).
These three leading ladies work seamlessly and tirelessly to the bring the show to life with a series of pitch perfect energetic performances. There’s laughter, sadness, and sheer exhilaration as they take you through all the hits and more - reminding you of how much of a legend Cher actually is.
We are first introduced to the star as a teenager in the 50s, where we see her meet future husband Sonny, and the rest as they say is history. Through a host of ever-changing backdrops, stunning costumes, and a stellar cast, we watch Cher’s story unfold throughout the decades, as she fights disappointment, heartbreak and the many pitfalls in her long-standing career.
The choreography is brilliant, constantly engaging and surprising - who would have thought there would be a tap routine in there? It’s not a surprise then to learn that Strictly Come Dancing’s Oti Mabuse is behind the playful and modern routines.
The script is great, with some moments of real hilarity, and the staging is perfect with dazzling sets, lighting and effects. Let’s face it, if you’re going to make a jukebox musical about a diva then Cher’s story is ideally placed.
It’s a delight to watch the story unfold throughout the decades and see how the lady made her mark on history. No expense has been spared here, as we are taken through all the biggest hits including, I Got You Babe, Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves and If I could Turn Back Time to name a few.
Meanwhile, the costumes and the attention to detail are staggering. All the singer’s most famous and outlandish outfits are there in all their glory, and we are there for it!
A well-earned standing ovation for all concerned.
If you’re ‘strong enough’ for this electrifying show, then bag yourself a ticket before it ends on Saturday.
