‘Cats sit on mats, hares sit on chairs, mules sit on stools, gophers sit on sofas and frogs sit on logs.’
So begins the Olivier Award-nominated stage production of Oi Frog & Friends!
Based on the bestselling books by Kes Gray and Jim Field, Oi Frog is a theatrical rhyming treat for tiny tots aged three-plus and their parents.
The production packs a huge amount of fun, songs, dancing and humour into its 60-minute running time. It’s a fast-paced show which does not let up - my four-year-old son was enthralled from the very first moment.
Children’s theatre can often border on the slightly slapstick and somewhat silly at times, but Oi Frog & Friends! was intelligent, well thought out and didn’t shy away from switching up the format and turning the narrative on its head.
The story was well plotted - with characters that came to life - the set, big and bright, and the acting spot-on. The actors also offered a pre-show entertainment, where they asked children their names and offered to rhyme them; a small touch, but one that excited and enthralled my child - and that’s ultimately what you want as a parent.
Five stars.
Oi Frog & Friends shows at Birmingham Hippodrome until 29 May. Tickets are on sale here.
