Highly regarded amateur musical theatre company Birmingham Midland Operatic Society (BMOS) are treading the boards at The Alexandra this week, presenting their version of 9 To 5.
With music and lyrics written by Dolly Parton, the musical is adapted from the hugely popular 1980 film of the same name - in which Parton starred - and has enjoyed storming success both on Broadway and in the West End.
Set in the late 1970s and very progressive for its time, it tells the lighthearted and inspiring story of three feisty women who tackle sexism and advocate for equal rights in the workplace. Banding together after a series of injustices, glamorous Doralee (Jo Smith), newcomer Judy (Rachel Richards) and frustrated Violet (Michelle Worthington) set about the business of getting revenge on their misogynistic boss, Franklin Hart Jr (James Gordanifar) - with hilarious results...
A good story with catchy tunes - including, of course, the hit title song - 9 To 5 is upbeat, funny, and an excellent production choice by BMOS. The whole cast exude professionalism and give fantastic performances. The sets are great, the choreography beautiful, the comic timing spot on. The vocals are impressive, too - Jo Smith’s powerful rendition of Backwoods Barbie and Rachel Richards’ heartfelt interpretation of Get Out And Stay Out are simply terrific.
Last night’s performance was extremely well received by the audience, who responded with enthusiasm to the show’s many laugh-out-loud moments and rounded off the evening with appreciative applause for the ensemble.
