Almost 24 hours after visiting Birmingham Hippodrome to see Leamington Spa-based Motionhouse Dance Company’s currently touring production of Nobody, I’m still thinking about the show. I simply can’t get it out of my head; it really was that good!

Nobody follows the journey of self-discovery made by seven characters as they attempt to find strength and support in each other.

Motionhouse makes use of its renowned dance-circus style to tell an emotional and ultimately uplifting story that’s full of twists and turns.

Combining dynamic and thrilling dancing with digital film, the show is about our relationship with ourselves, and what the voice in our head means. The company’s Artistic Director, Kevin Finnan, has created two sets of characters. There are the everyday characters - ourselves in the normal world - and then there are the crows, who are the voices in our head.

Nobody is a powerful and exhilarating show from start to finish. There were audible gasps from the audience as dancers fell from great heights, were thrown like rag dolls around the stage and balanced precariously on each other or their props. As well as their astounding physical strength and agility, the ensemble also conveyed strong emotion and inner conflict through their graceful movement.

The backdrop reminded me of the entrapment of lockdown, while the set felt like an additional performer in the production. I loved the costumes, too, the black crows contrasting brilliantly with the brightly coloured outfits.

Both myself and my friend absolutely loved this performance. Indeed, we would’ve been entirely happy to sit through it again in order to see all the things we missed the first time!

The standing ovation was well deserved.

If you haven’t seen Motionhouse before, you are missing a treat. And if you haven’t seen Nobody yet, be sure to catch it when it returns to the region at Coventry’s Warwick Arts Centre from 27 to 30 April.
